Examining Red Meat And Its Consequences - Medical Daily

Back in October of 2019, the medical journal Annals of Internal Medicine published guidelines that were considered controversial since it advised Americans to just carry on eating the current amounts of red and processed meat that we’re already eating. This is based on the pretense that meat-eaters are simply incapable of completely changing their diets, per the authors. As such, the benefits that can be gained from reducing the consumption of red and processed meat are all insignificant. At least, that’s what the study authors have written.

These guidelines, however, contradict previous studies that show a clear link of early death and disease with processed and red meat.

How come?

This is because according to the authors, while it’s indeed true that Americans have decreased their consumption of meat in the last couple of decades, the amount of processed meat we eat remain unchanged. This means that while we eat less meat, the meat we end up eating is still processed. This includes ham, hot dogs, and sausages.

This is particularly alarming because recent (and past) research have shown that eating three and a half more servings of meat on a weekly level is associated with a higher risk of mortality. And while that doesn’t sound too much, the numbers can quickly add up.

In fact, both red and processed meat have also been linked to cancer by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer since there is sufficient evidence to back this up.

However, the problem isn’t just eating processed meat, but rather not eating protective foods as well. Reducing meat intake is beneficial but it won’t be much help if people don’t eat nutritious food as well. In fact, the USDA also stated that around 90 percent of Americans don’t eat the recommended amount of vegetables daily.

The good news is eating less meat allows for space that we can fill with whole grains, fruits, vegetables and plant-based proteins, all of which are healthy foods.

So the question in the end, isn't whether we are not eating processed meat but whether we’re balancing it out with good food as well.
