Fareway, the Boone-based grocery store chain known for thick steaks and hearty chops, will open its first Fareway Meat Market on May 26 in Omaha.
Boone-based Fareway Stores Inc. will open its first Fareway Meat Market in Iowa this fall.
The 5,000-square-foot full-service meat market will be located at 3720 Lincoln Way in Ames in the former Wallaby’s and Sports Page location.
Fareway Chief Executive Reynolds Cramer said in a statement that along with wide selection of meat, the new market will have expanded seafood and sushi, artisan cheeses, wine, craft beer and other items.
Fareway opened its first meat market in May of 2016 in Omaha. The company added a second location in Lincoln, Neb., last fall.
Fareway also operates 119 grocery stores in five Midwest states – Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota. The company opened a new store on Fleur Drive in Des Moines on Wednesday.

The Meat Markets capitalize on Fareway’s popular meat counter, the heart of the grocery chain that also is known for its low prices, small stores and customer service.
“Our meat market stores continue to provide for growth potential in areas where a conventional, full-size Fareway store may not fit," Cramer said.
Construction on the Ames Meat Market is expected to begin in the next two months.
