Police: Meat cleaver, wheelchair leg used in assault

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) - A 72-year-old man will appear in court on Friday on allegations that he attacked and injured another man on Christmas Day 2017 using a meat cleaver and a metal wheelchair leg.

Earl Williams, 72, was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on Thursday after being released from the Cowlitz County jail in Washington.

According to court records, the attack happened Christmas Day 2017 and the victim suffered “serious physical injury” during the attack with the meat cleaver. The man also suffered physical injuries when hit with the metal wheelchair leg.

Police have not commented on the motive of the alleged attack.

A homicide detective was asked to help investigate but it was solely based on resource needs for the Portland Police Bureau and not indicative of the victim’s injuries, according to law enforcement.

Williams is expected to be arraigned on Friday at the Multnomah County Justice Center.
