Rod Aspenson of Westby Locker and Meats was recognized at the 79th annual convention of the Wisconsin Association of Meat Processors Meat Product Show, which was held in Madison, April 3-8.
Aspenson’s honors went beyond the show entries this year when he was presented with the “ Meritorious Service Award”. This prestigious award is presented to one meat processor in the state annually for their continued excellence in the field.
Aspenson was humbled and honored to have received the award and said he never dreamed he would actually win it.
Westby locker and Meats also received the following awards for their meat entries in the show:
Commercial Boneless Ham (Grand Champion)
Semi-Boneless Ham (Reserve Champion)
Traditional Boneless Ham (Champion)
Chili Cheese Hotdogs, small diameter (Reserve Champion)
This competition is the largest of its kind in the United States. Meat processing plants and meat markets from around Wisconsin entered 869 individual products in 36 different categories.
More than 40 judges, including food scientists, out-of-state meat processors and other food industry professionals were required to effectively evaluate the many products during the product evaluation session, Saturday, April 7. Individual products are scored for external appearance, eye-appeal, internal appearance, aroma and taste.
Aspenson congratulated all other area meat processors who participated in the annual event.
