A SCIENTIST has created 3D-printed vegetarian steaks and chicken, but they don’t look appetising.
The meat-free food contains protein powder from rice or peas and parts of seaweed.
Guiseppe Scionti designed a program using computer-aided design (CAD) software to turn the ingredients into “meat”.
The ingredients are put into a machine using a syringe and then into a long micro-filament to be shaped into a steak.
The “straw-coloured paste” is reported to be similar to steaks in texture.
The machine can produce almost a quarter pound of raw “steak” in less than a hour.
Scionti has also created a “fibrous plant-based chicken”.
The Italian scientist is currently on the menu at a restaurant in Barcelona.
However, he admits that not many chefs have been interested because they want “something that looks like a steak and tastes like a mushroom”.
He told Spanish newspapers El Pais that the “steak” needs perfecting.
He said: “Its appearance can be improved with an investment of time and new prototypes, since this aspect is very important from the consumer's point of view.”
Mr Scionti told the Mail Online: “The taste of the first prototypes is good, but it does't mimic the taste of animal meat, yet.
“However, that does not worry me, because the technologies to imitate the taste of animal meat have already been developed in the last years, while the main challenge for me was to obtain the animal meat-like consistency and texture, which was not invented yet.”
He added that the ingredients are all natural, plant-based and non-GMO.
Scionti’s goal is to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from livestock, which he says is 14.5 per cent of total greenhouse emissions caused by man.
