High blood pressure: Best meat to eat to help lower your reading

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a common condition many people don’t realise they have. This is due to symptoms being difficult to spot.

But it’s important to know what your blood pressure reading is for serious complications such as heart attacks and strokes can occur.

One way to prevent and control the condition is to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

For meat lovers, does this mean giving up meat? What is the best meat to eat to help lower your reading?

Your body uses saturated fat to make cholesterol therefore eating too much saturated fat will raise your cholesterol, explains Blood Pressure UK.

It adds: “Too much cholesterol can raise your risk of heart disease and stroke, so if you have high blood pressure it is very important to keep your cholesterol levels low.”

Saturated fat is usually found in animal products, such as red meats and pork, so these are best avoided.

Examples of red meat include beef, lamb and mutton, veal, venison and goat.

You should also cut down on your intake of processed meats such as sausage, bacon and ham.

Lean meat is a much better option when it comes to hypertension, specifically skinless turkey and chicken and fish.

Research has found omega-3 fatty acids can help control high blood pressure, and this can be found in fatty fish like mackerel and salmon.

For cheese lovers, what’s the best cheese to lower your reading?

Dairy products, like cheese, can be a good source of calcium, which keeps bones strong, but can also be high in saturated fat, and some cheeses can be very high in salt.

Th best choices are goats cheese and low-fat cheeses such a soft or cottage cheese.

Eating too much cheese can lead to high blood pressure, as well as increasing the risk of high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease.

In the UK, the standard portion size of cheese recommended daily is 30g, says British Heart Foundation.

It adds: “Your daily diet should feature three 30g portions of dairy products, and cheese alone won’t do.”

Symptoms of high blood pressure include headaches, shortness of breath, dizziness and stomach pain.

Recognising these early signs is important if you want to avoid complications, such as a heart attack.

In severe cases, a person with high blood pressure may experience what’s known as a hypertensive crisis, which can lead to a stroke.
