Belcampo Meat opening flagship restaurant in Oakland

Organic butchery specialist Anya Fernald is a big booster of Oakland, having located her company headquarters here and founding the city’s Eat Real festival to highlight the slow-food scene.

Now she’s placed her flagship restaurant here.

Belcampo Oakland will open Sunday, July 1, at Jack London Square. The company took over the former Bocanova space, renovating it into a 230-seat farmhouse-style restaurant with a 12-foot butcher counter, a bar and an outdoor dining area.

The chef from Belcampo Santa Monica, Brett Halfpap, has moved north to oversee the menu, one that’s been expanded beyond what Belcampo offers at its smaller outposts.

The focus is still on the organic, grass-fed, sustainable and humanely raised meats for which Belcampo is known.  All of the meat and poultry — from cattle to quail —  is raised on the company’s farm near Mount Shasta and butchered in Belcampo facilities. Heritage breeds are a specialty.

But at this flagship, look for globally inspired dishes — pork pibil tacos, duck confit poutine and lamb shawarma — to join the steaks, pork chops, ribs and chicken. Two burgers are offered: One’s aged for 21 days, the other for 100 days.

Cocktails are made with Belcampo-grown herbs, grasses and fruit, and East Bay brews dominate the beer menu, with Oakland United, Federation, Alameda Island, Faction and Drake’s on tap.

Details: Belcampo’s butcher shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The restaurant will serve from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 11 on Friday. On weekends, Belcampo will open for brunch at 10 a.m. and stay open until 11 p.m. Saturday and 10 p.m. Sunday. 55 Webster St.; 510-281-0998; www.belcampo.com.

The company’s other NorCal restaurants are located in Larkspur, Palo Alto and San Francisco.
