Chicken Will Be First Clean Meat To Hit Market - This Year

Clean meat chicken will hit the market this year, according to JUST Founder Josh Tetrick.

Clean meat - also known as lab, cultured, or bio meat, is made from animal cells. While it is not vegan, it is supported by a number of vegans because of its potential to lessen the number of animals slaughtered for food. It is also reportedly more environmentally-friendly than traditional livestock rearing.

A number of companies are working on bringing a product to market, with many saying 2020 is the goal. Last year Tetrick said he was aiming for 2018, and he is still sticking with that date.

Food systems

During an interview at CEBIT - a recent business and digital festival - Tetrick spoke about food systems, and how all humans should have access to eating healthily.

He said: "Think about what we believe to be basic rights - freedom of speech, everyone deserves the right to have an education. These are basic rights that most people agree with, and I think eating well, just eating food that is good for us, that is not depleting to the environment - I think that should be a basic right too.

"We need to find out a way to make it happen. The tools that we're using from processed sugar to conventional animal protein make it really, really hard to ensure that right is available to everyone and we're trying to do everything we can to fix it."

Fixing it

When asked how this can be fixed, Tetrick said the first step is realising there is a problem, then realising there are tools available for use.

"Tools in the plant kingdom that we can search for, even tools in the animal kingdom. In the plant kingdom we screen through all these different plants...in the animal kingdom we can take a cell from an animal - without killing that animal - feed it nutrients and grow it, or brew it in the way you might brew beer.

"So there's a big toolkit in nature that we can use to make all sorts of products. And we have to do it as fast as we can.

2018

Tetrick then revealed that his company JUST will release a clean meat 'chicken' product before the end of the year. "We will launch the world's first meat product without needing to kill an animal," he said.

"It will be called JUST Meat, and the type of meat will be chicken."

Earlier this year Tetrick was interviewed by PBN Founder Klaus Mitchell. He said clean meat products will most likely be available in restaurants before they hit the retail market.
